“Psalm 19- The Song of Words and Works” (Part Three)

“Psalm 19- The Song of Words and Works” (Part Three)

This week we are considering Psalm 19, and the witnesses stand to declare the glory of God. We began Monday by seeing the testimony of creation and then yesterday looked at the scriptures. Today we close by adding…

The Testing of God’s Child (vs.12-14)

Now comes the real test- the quintessential “so what.” You see the glory of creation, consistently reflecting and obeying God. You see the Word of God extolling the character built into the lives of those who obey God’s Word. Is there any doubt as to what follows? David has preached his sermon, and now gives the invitation. The facts are irrefutable, the examples undeniable. Now, the application is inescapable.

  • Am I bearing witness to Him and His glory?
  • Am I consistently modeling obedience?
  • Am I displaying the character of God and His Word?

David’s desire is to live a life that is blameless before God (not sinless, blameless). His questions penetrate with blinding clarity, and call us to a necessary moment of…

Self-Examination (v.12)

Look within- who can understand his own sinfulness? The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, who can know it? We cannot depend on our own judgment, and must be willing to examine ourselves in the light of the Word of God (James 1- mirror)- for only then will we get an accurate grasp of the true condition of our soul.

Submission (v.13)

David looks within and long sot be be clean before the Lord, so he asks God’s help in two strategic areas-

Secret sins- sins he is even unaware of need to be cleansed, for God is NOT unaware of them. This is not necessarily so because the sins are too small to see, but because they have become too characteristic to even register on the scale (“conscience seared with a hot iron”). Has sin gained such a comfort zone in our hearts that we don’t even feel its sting anymore?

Presumptuous sins- this is the opposite end of the spectrum. These willful, intentional, deliberate sins are personified as tyrants that seek to enslave the servant of God.

This is the spiritual counterpart of v.6, “nothing is hidden.” Contemplating the Word of God has done its work, “piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Heb 4:12). Having been so penetrated by truth, David responds with repentance.

Supplication (v.14)

“Meditation”- David closes this wonderful song with a sweet prayer. He asks that his words and thoughts be equal, for the words of the mouth are an empty sham unless backed up by the reality of the heart.

“Acceptable”- David’s greatest concern is to know that his heart and service are acceptable to his Master. Paul agreed in the NT, “Therefore also we have as our ambition… to be pleasing to Him.” (2 Cor 5:9).

David ends with a full recognition of his responsibility to respond to the Word of God, yet with joy and blessing not just guilt and shame. He comes to His God, not as the sinner’s accuser and judge but as his refuge (rock) and rescuer (redeemer). It is for this cause that, even in dealing with his failures, David can still celebrate the privilege of being God’s servant (vs.11,13).

David has surveyed the heavens that declare the glory of God, and has looked into the Word of God that declares His glory. The result? He has seen himself in the light of these two expressions of divine revelation. He has recognized…

  • The completeness of God’s creation
  • The perfection of God’s Word, and
  • The sinful condition of his own life.

No wonder he closes with a prayer of repentance and a cry for help! In all these things, he has discovered afresh how much he needs this God- His strength and redeemer! This is the true spiritual result of the study of the Word of God. It moves us to a consciousness of sin and a sensitivity to holiness. It is the wonderful ministry of the Word to our hearts that makes this possible, and enables us to live the concern of Paul…

“We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Cor 10:5).
